A fitting tribute to a great Australian, former Governor of New South Wales, Dame Marie Bashir.
Our intrepid reporter Graham Ross was on-hand to capture the magic when much-loved
Dame Marie planted a rose named in her honour in the gardens of Sydney’s Government House.
A fitting rose tribute. Dame Marie Bashir & Graham Ross at Government House.
The light pink, fragrant rose was bred by Brisbane rose breeder Paul Hains and is planted close to the ‘Governor Macquarie’ rose Dame Marie planted
in 2009. "I've always wanted to meet that man, she told Graham. “Maybe in the next world. He turned our country in the direction which made us
the people we are today: caring, inclusive and believing in a fair go for all.” ‘Governor Marie Bashir’ will be available as a potted rose in spring
from Swanes. Royalties from sales of the rose will be donated to the Wayside Chapel, of which Dame Marie is patron.
