Most vegetables thrive in full sun, so aim for a location that receives at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Short on space? Look upwards. Sunny walls, fences and balcony rails can be just as productive when used with hanging pots, shelves or vertical planters. Even a bright window sill can support herbs.

1. Pick your growing style
-
Before planting, consider your space, soil quality and how hands-on you want to be.
-
If you have well-draining, crumbly soil, planting directly into the ground is a simple and a cost-effective option, giving roots plenty of room to grow.
-
If your soil is heavy clay or very sandy, raised beds are a smart alternative. They offer better drainage, warmer soil and greater control over growing conditions.
-
For balconies and small courtyards, pots, troughs and grow bags are ideal. They’re portable, renter-friendly and easy to manage. Choose containers with good drainage and enough depth for roots. Self-watering options like wicking beds are especially useful if time is limited.

Dig in organic matter to enrich soil and boost plant growth.
2. Build from the ground up
Healthy soil is the secret to a productive vegie patch. In garden beds, loosen soil and dig in compost, aged manure or worm castings. Raised beds should be filled with a blend of quality soil, compost and organic matter. For containers, use a premium vegetable potting mix.
Water seeds and seedlings gently with a fine rose or spray to avoid washing them away.
3. Water and feed well
Water regularly, especially in warm or windy weather. Seedlings need consistent moisture, while established plants prefer deep, less frequent watering. Feed regularly with an organic pelletised or liquid fertiliser suited to vegetables to boost vigour and productivity.
