African Odyssey

A must visit, Victoria Falls.

South Africa’s Cape Floral Kingdom is a botanical treasure, one of six floral kingdoms in the world, the smallest but the richest, and the hottest of global biodiversity hot spots. This is the famous Fynbos with 70% of plants found nowhere else in the world. It is also one of the most threatened reservoirs of plant life but constantly being cared for. Our journey starts with four nights on the waterfront in Cape Town. There you’ll discover South Africa’s unique flora.

in Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden, and travel into the Cape Winelands to historic Stellenbosch with its lovely old colonial buildings and rich heritage, from 1679. In Jonkershoek Valley, near Stellenbosch, the historic garden of Ina van der Spuy, beloved doyenne of South African gardening with its Cape Dutch charm, will calm your mind and absolutely delight your spirit. Then you’ll head to the West Coast to Postberg Private Flower Reserve with sweeping carpets of wild flowers framed by the rugged beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. We choose to stay in historic Saldanha Bay, first charted by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in the late 1400s. Today, it’s one of Africa’s major export ports for iron ore but retains its quiet coastal character. Then with a stop at Duckitt’s famous Orchid Farm and the serene Waylands Private Flower Reserve we travel along the picturesque West Coast to Franschhoek. Established by Frederick Duckitt in the early 1900s, carpets of Arum lilies, blue flax and chincherinchee paint the landscape here. Now we take the glorious garden route to George with stays in Montague and Knysna. In the morning our flight is to Victoria Falls. A sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River will reset our mood as we soak in the views of the river and the animals who live here.

You’ll hear the roar of Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World that stretches 1.7km wide, shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe. And feel the thunderous power of the Zambezi River as it plunges over the edge, creating a mesmerising curtain of water and mist that nourishes the lush surrounding rainforest. From the Zambezi, we head to Johannesburg for the finale. We transfer to Ivory Tree Game Lodge, nestled within the Pilanesberg National Park, and home to inspiring populations of Africa’s game. Early morning and late afternoon game drives will be exciting!
