Outdoor entertaining at home

20 TIPS

There’s no better place to entertain than in your own backyard– amidst flowers, herbs and the soft hum of summer evenings. Whether you’re hosting a relaxed lunch, a twilight get-together or just a few friends among the blooms, these tips will help you make the most of your garden’s magic this season.

Follow these simple tips to style, refresh and enjoy your garden– making summer gatherings effortless!

1. Decorate with nature

Your garden is the best stylist you have. Use leafy branches, flowering stems and freshly cut herbs as centrepieces. Scatter them down the table, arrange them in a log or pretty pot nearby or float bloomsin bowls of water – simple and stunning.

2. Light up the night

Hang fairy lights through trees, nestle solar lanterns in garden beds or place battery-operated tealights in terracotta pots or glass vases. As night falls, the glow will make your garden sparkle.

3. Create cosy corners

Turn a quiet corner into a conversation nook. A bench under a tree, a pair of old chairs by the vegie patch – every garden has hidden spots perfect for chatting, reading and sipping something cool.

4. Serve garden-fresh drinks

Set up a rustic table near a garden bed, decorate it with cut herbs and citrus, and serve water infused with rosemary or lemon balm. It’s refreshment straight from the garden.

5. Celebrate with bold pots

Cluster lots of pots filled with bright summer colour – petunias, geraniums, salvias – near where people gather. It brings the garden right into the party.

6. Get your grass ready

If your lawn is part of the fun, keep it lush, green and healthy. Water early in the morning, and don’t cut too short – longer blades help it survive the heat and the party! Then fill that space with fun.

7. Add a splash of serenity

Even a small bowl of floating petals, a bird bath or a bubbling pot fountain adds calm. The sound and sparkle of water instantly cools a hot day.

8. Fill the air with scent

Fragrance lifts a summer gathering. Position pots of lavender, lemon verbena or thyme near seating so the scent releases when brushed against. Guests will remember long after they’ve gone.

TOP TIP

Water your garden early so plants stay fresh... and you can enjoy the party worry-free!

9. Keep bugs at bay

Burn citronella or lemongrass candles, or use potted marigolds, lavender and basil as natural repellents – they look good so do double duty.

10. Elevate your drinks

Freeze edible flowers such as violas, pansies, hibiscus, lavender or berries into ice cubes to bring fresh, seasonal flair to drinks. Simply place a small bloom or a few berries in each compartment, cover with water and freeze. They make cocktails, sparkling water or punch look effortlessly fresh and inviting.

11. Build a fun spot for kids

Set up a small space for little ones with a picnic blanket, bubbles and a few nature-inspired toys. Everyone relaxes more when the kids are entertained, too.

Plan ahead so you can relax and enjoy every moment this summer

12. Extend the invitation

Your guests aren’t the only ones who’ll enjoy the party. Bees and butterflies bring life to a garden. Plant nectar-rich flowers like salvia, echinacea or verbena nearby and let nature join in the celebrations

13. Grow your own shade

Train climbers like ornamental grape or star jasmine over a pergola to create natural shade that cools and softens your outdoor space. As the foliage fills in, you’ll have a leafy canopy perfect for summer entertaining beneath.

14. Sweep and shine

Before guests arrive, give your garden a quick tidy-up. Brush away cobwebs from corners, sweep pathways and wipe down outdoor furniture. It takes just a few minutes but instantly makes the space feel cared for, much more welcoming and ready for entertaining.

15. Refresh the deck

A clean deck or patio sets the scene for any gathering. Hose surfaces, remove fallen leaves or debris and wipe pots and planters. Fresh, tidy spaces help guests feel relaxed and highlight the beauty of your garden without extra fuss.

16. Make spaces welcoming

Add warmth and comfort to hard surfaces with outdoor rugs, scatter cushions or throws. Soft textures invite guests to sit, lounge or play, and they help define seating areas while adding colour and style to your garden setting

17. Serve without fuss

Set up a dedicated spot for drinks, snacks and utensils so everything is within reach. Use a rustic tray, a small table or a wooden crate, and decorate all with fresh herbs or flowers before presenting. A tidy, accessible station keeps the party flowing effortlessly
