We’re so thrilled to finally get flowers on our protea after three years. It’s a gorgeous bloom but what do we do now? Please help.
ANSWER:
It looks like you have Protea ‘Pink Ice’, a popular garden variety and favourite for florists. You can either cut the flower for a vase or leave it for birds, bees and yourself to enjoy. If you cut it, take a long stem and stop just before a dormant bud – this encourages new growth that can flower next
season. If you prefer to leave it, prune only after the flower has finished. Make sure to remove only stems that have flowered, then feed your plant with an organic native plant fertiliser to keep it healthy and ready for all next year’s blooms.
