In the Vegie Patch: Sow tomato, eggplant and capsicum seeds indoors

Last week we sowed five seeds of an oxheart tomato (Cuore Di Bue Rugantino) in small pots in a mini greenhouse sitting on a heat pad in our laundry.

Two of them have germinated already! We have placed them on a well-lit window sill to continue growing.

You can use an indoor heater to give the warmth these seeds need to germinate. It’s fun to sow seeds of capsicum and eggplant and grow them on until its warm enough to plant them outside.

Second Round

We’ve had great success with kale, baby spinach, Swiss chard, kohlrabi and fennel; harvesting them all now. So we are planting a second round of these nutritious vegetables.

Minestrone is one way to enjoy them and Karen Martini’s recipe is the best we’ve tasted. Recipe to come next week.

This week we are cooking Spinach Pie (Spanakopita) using a mix of spinach, kale and silver beet with parsley, mint and sorrel; all growing in our garden.
