Oak-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia)
Description: this hydrangea is a particularly good shrub for either dry shade or sun. Like all hydrangeas it is deciduous, with large
leaves shaped like those of the oak. The white flowers grow in gorgeous cones about 25cm long, from mid-summer to mid-autumn. Leaves age to a deep
red, bronze or purple for a beautiful autumn show before they fall, later than other species of hydrangea.get root rot in a heart-beat if it stands
in soggy soil even for short periods.
Size: 2m high x 2.5m wide
Cultivation: prepare the bed well by digging in organic matter before planting into well-drained soil. Water regularly until established,
and prune after leaves have dropped. Feed with slow-release fertiliser in early spring and mulch well.
Special comments: oak-leafed hydrangea will tolerate dry shade, but it doesn’t like too much root competition, and will not cope with
wet feet.
