Q: My camellias were decimated last year with an insect. I assume that’s what it is. Now it’s spreading to our roses. What is it and what can I do to stop it? Please help.
Kelly L. St. Ives NSW
A: The last two years (2021-2022) were the wettest years on record, and now, we’re in one of the driest. As a result, it's encouraged the spread of the tea mite or red-spider mite.
This pest builds up in huge plague numbers and attacks both the upper and under sides of the foliage. Apply Multicrop’s Eco Bug Organic Spray, Yates Naturasoap or OCP eco-oil to the leaves, ensuring it is liberally applied to all surfaces.
At this time roses, azaleas, all viburnums, grapes, oak leaves, and citrus fruit are attacked. Hosing water onto foliage and fruit can also discourage the pest.
