By the seaside

Q: I’ve heard there is a rose that grows close to the seaside. Is this true and is there one with white flowers?

A: I suspect the rose you’ve heard about is the Japanese rose (Rosa rugosa). It’s happy on the coast and thrives inland as well. It’s a very tough rose.

It seldom gets powdery mildew or black spot. I’ve never seen one with any disease or insect attack in 60 years.

As for its flowers, it’s a definite 10/10. During summer and autumn, perfumed single and double blooms in deep pink, purple or pristine white, each measuring 9cm across. Once flowers fade, luscious marble-sized scarlet hips (fruit) appear and are often used in Asia for jams and jellies.
