Fancy finger limes

Q: I see prices for finger lime fruit are skyrocketing! Why is this happening when, I believe, they are a native tree?

Cathy G., Orange, NSW

A: Like all citrus, the Aussie Finger lime needs stable climatic conditions, regular watering, rich soil and regular feeding. Any variations will alter fruit production. The CSIRO and commercial nurseries are cross-breeding cumquats with finger limes and other selections, resulting in bigger fruit with variable flavours and hopefully, fewer spines. Demand is growing for Finger limes, especially from high-end restaurants. You can grow a finger lime in a half-barrel container.
