Q: We’ve been buying Kipfler potatoes for years and wondering if we can grow them at home?
Peter G., GCC Member
A: You can grow Kipfler potatoes in the home garden, but preferably not from those shop bought. Mr Fothergill’s virus-free potato tubers are available in garden centres. In warm temperate areas, plant August to October. In cool areas, plant before the last frost. Add lots of compost and manure to improve the soil. Dig a trench 15cm deep, add anorganic-based fertiliser and dig in well. Place tubers in the trench at least 30cm apart. Backfill and keep the soil moist. As plants produce foliage, hill more soil over the foliage (‘earthing up’), which will produce more potatoes. Leave only the tips of the leaves showing. Repeat as necessary up to 30-40cm tall mounds.
