Passion for pink

Q:
I’m hearing stories from friends about a new plant called pink spice. Is it a herb or a shrub? Apparently, it has a great perfume but is rare and tricky to grow. What’s the story please?

A: It is a wonderful shrub called Luculia pinceana ‘Pink Spice’. It develops huge heads of hydrangea-like flowers with a sweet perfume, especially in the evening.

They don’t like frost but do like rich composted soil, and good drainage is essential. I incorporated Who Flung Dung and our own compost two months prior to planting.

We’ve always had a luculia in our garden until renovations removed it, so we’re thrilled to have it back. A garden gem if ever there was one.
