Q: Several years ago, I was given a cutting of a rare yellow mandevilla. I managed to strike it and planted it in the garden and now it’s a beautiful golden flowering plant in our garden, but it won’t climb. How can I get it to grow up a trellis?
Neville A., Gold Coast, Qld
A: Mandevillas are primarily climbing plants while their close relatives, the dipladenias tend to have a more shrubby growth habit and larger flowers. Despite the reclassification of all dipladenias as mandevillas, certaincultivars, like your stunning yellow form, the Dipladenia Diamantina Opal Yellow, retained its original name.
Its maximum height is 60cm, so you will struggle to get it to climb. Nonetheless, its vibrant clear golden yellow trumpet flowers can still been enjoyed when grown in full sun.
