Trick or treat

Question

I’ve seen a native groundcover she-oak at garden centres. Is this for real or a hoax?

Answer

It is real and called Casuarina glauca ‘Cousin It’, named after the ‘hairy’ character in the tv show, The Addams Family. Discovered in Bulli NSW, it is truly a weeping groundcover able to spill over an embankment to 2m. Therefore, it is perfect on garden walling, hanging baskets, large pots, or simply as a weed smothering groundcover. It happily grows in full sun to light shade and attains a height of only 15cm. It will grow from cool to warm temperate to tropical areas in a variety of soils, even coastal sands.
