Q: I loved your tulip display last year outside the Clubhouse garden. I’d like to try the same myself this year, any secrets?
Beverley L., Pennant Hills, NSW
A: Wait until late May or early June, to plant your tulips, to allow the soil temperature to cool down. Order your tulips from Van Diemens Quality Bulbs or Tesselaar.
Place tulips in the crisper of your refrigerator until planting time. Prepare the soil in your garden bed by adding compost or soil conditioner from your garden centre. Sprinkle blood and bone, dolomite and sulfate of potash over the tulip bed and cultivate gently. If your soil is heavy, dig in horticultural sand to help with drainage. I overplanted my tulips with alyssum to suppress weeds and add a softness to the flower display.
