QUESTION

This rose covered arbour was photographed at the beautiful Mayfield Gardens in Oberon. Do you know what it might be please?

Michael & Helen, Tamworth, NSW

ANSWER

It is Rosa ‘Lamarque’, a Noisette rose developed in France in 1830. It has fragrant white flowers with lemoncoloured centres. Large clusters of flowers are produced all the way up the stem to 3m. Personally, I think it is the best arbour rose available. It was also the choice of the former Keeper of The Roses at Flemington Race Course, Melbourne – he replaced the old mixed roses with ‘Lamarque’ on their huge arbour. Garden centres will have it bare rooted in winter or potted up during the year, but order early as it is highly sought after.
