Whip it, snip it





Q:
My young flowering gum has produced long whippy stems from the root stock. My worry is they are coming from the actual graft point not below. The above growth is also weak, please help.

A: If the new growth is coming from the graft union, it is not suckers from the understock. I would still remove them as they are starving your tree of nutrients and preventing it from growing into a single stem. The spindly growth above can also be pruned by 30-50 percent and fed now too while conditions are ideal for regrowth. Use a native fertiliser like Bush Tucker.
